High Risk Vehicles
1. AA Insurance has released a list of the most frequently stolen vehicles according to analysis of theft claims made to the company over the last four years. According to this list, the top five stolen vehicle are the Nissan Silvia, Subaru Impreza, Nissan Skyline, Subaru Legacy and Mitsubishi Legnum. Comment. This information broadly matches NZP data.

2. However, NZP data indicates that the Subaru Legacy is by far the most commonly stolen vehicle and that the Silvia barely makes the top twenty (see chart above). Previous NTA reporting has identified a design fault in the Legacy (pillar less windows and flexible glass) as the likely reason for its selection by car thieves. Comment. Consideration should be given to an education campaign for owners of the top five stolen vehicles informing them how to make their vehicle harder to steal. Liaison with car insurance firms will provide further information.
3. AA Insurance identified that pre 2000 vehicles were targeted as these older vehicles lacked more sophisticated security features such as electronic locking, alarms and immobilisers.
