2. Message from our new Executive Officer
Firstly I would like to say how nice it is to be back in and onboard with the NZSA.
With the global economy showing signs of recovery and the New Zealand security industry poised for significant growth, the next 12 -18 months will be a period of considerable change for the NZSA.
Key on the agenda will be how the NZSA is marketed not only to the security industry but more importantly to the consumer, culminating in stronger recognition of the NZSA and greater demand for your products and services.
As NZSA members you will also see many additional benefits along with improved auditing and accreditation processes aimed at increasing the professionalism of the security industry as a whole.
I look forward to meeting many of you at this year’s annual security conference, the date of which will be confirmed in the comings weeks.
Regards
Greg Watts
Executive Officer
3. MITO Update
The Association met with
MITO , the Training Organisation, for Vehicle Installers and a proposed training programme has been developed that enables training and assessment for Vehicle Installers in the following National Certificate.
National Certificate in Motor Industry (Vehicle Servicing) with strand in Vehicle Security.
This level 2 programme is designed for new entrants who enrol in a
MITO apprenticeship. Provision has also been made for entry into the programme by those who have undertaken Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) and for those employees who have already been awarded a Trade Certificate or National Certificate in a related occupation.
Core programme and order of progression.
This
MITO vehicle Security Training Programme consists of 2 modules, which must be completed in sequence.
The modules.
Each module outlines a group of unit standard based packages that form a natural stage in the apprentices learning and assessment. The modules follow a logical sequence from a lower to a higher complexity of knowledge and skill.
Compulsory Unit Standards - All compulsory unit standards in level 2 National Certificate is included in the programme.
Elective Unit Standards - All elective unit standard choices have been pre selective for this programme and provide a wide ranging skill base for Vehicle Security technicians. Sufficient unit standards have been included to meet the minimum requirements of the National Certificates.
Theory Training Delivery - There are distance learning packages in this programme. Some distance learning packages may be replaced by the learner with off job training.
Practical training delivery and assessment - There are particular requirements that apply to the delivery and assessment of the practical assessments packages.
Off job training delivery and assessment - All units can be completed through either the distance learning packages or the practical assessment packages.
MITO is proposing to offer a structured training programme that meets the needs of new entrants to the industry in a Vehicle Security workshop environment. It will also meet the needs of employees who have completed a related Trade Certificate or National Certificate.
4. Security and Insurance
The Security industry and the Insurance Industry share common goals. Although they may have different reasons for those goals, they are shared, none the less.
The insurance industry pays out massive amounts of money each year for burglary claims. These can occur in all sorts of locations, from someone’s vehicle, home or business - even while walking down the street. Burglars are becoming more and more brazen in their attempts to take things that don’t belong to them. Our personal safety is now, more than ever, a major concern. 10 years ago, the thought of someone breaking into your home may not have been as frightening as it is today. Drugs are a major driver of that fear. Several years ago ‘P’ was almost unheard of unless you were in the drug trade. This has to affect the way that the Security and Insurance industries think. The type of equipment that is installed into vehicles, houses and commercial premises and the advice you give, needs to be reflective of protecting people and property in our current society.
Property conservation is obviously important, but personal safety and well being is even more important. As security professionals the advice that you give to people is taken with the utmost respect from your customers. Being a member of the NZSA quantifies that respect and gives it credibility.
As an insurer IAG recommends that our customers install equipment that is fit for purpose. We also recommend that it is done by an NZSA member. We see this as a very important quality control issue as we are unable to inspect all our customers’ vehicles, houses and business locations. The use of NZSA members gives us that peace of mind.
Regards
Brendon McLaughlin
NZSA Board Member representing IAG Insurance
