New Zealand Security Association STAR Rating For motorcycles, scooters & quads"

Refer to ‘basic specifications' under motorcycle security for details of the minimum product requirements.
The following specifications are the minimum recommended by the NZSA
and are designed to provide the owner of a motorcycle, scooter or quad with a
guideline when purchasing a security system.

3 STAR - IMMOBILISER

The NZSA consider that rider safety is paramount and that a security system should not have any cause to reduce or endanger rider safety. The use of ‘normally open' immobiliser relays is not entirely suitable for motorcycles due to their inherent nature of returning to the open state should power to them be interrupted. Interruption could possibly be caused by loose or faulty wiring connections, riding over potholes, rough terrain or other hazards. The ‘normally closed' type of relay is therefore recommended.

BASIC SPECIFICATIONS
• Automatic engine immobiliser - minimum of one circuit. Dual circuit recommended where possible, practical and safe.
• Immobilisation to be within 20~40 seconds after the ignition is turned off
• Where relays are used, it is recommended that ‘normally closed' type be used. The ‘normally open' type may be used, but with caution.
• Where ‘normally open' type are used, the system shall have a minimum of two positive (+) and two negative (-) inputs for the power supply.
• Removal of a power or a ground shall not affect the safe operation of the motorcycle
• Immobiliser relays to be a minimum of 8amps continuous
• The system may be set or unset by any of the following;
a) A coded digital device (eg: keypad)
b) A coded proximity device (eg: transponder)
c) A remote controlled device (eg: remote control)
d) Other device
• Optical indication of arming and disarming
• Visual signalling devices (eg: indicator or park light flash)
• Once disarmed, the system must re-arm between 20~120 seconds if engine not started
• System housing to be waterproof
• Warning stickers which does not identify the model of system
• Shall be installed according to the practices of AS/NZS3749.2 1997

4 STAR - IMMOBILISER & ALARM

If the system has alarm functions, it shall include;
• A sounding device (eg: siren or the motorcycle horn)
• Shall activate from at least three of the following:- ignition on, seat removal, tilt switch, mercury switch, impact sensor, or other sensor
• Optical warning device (flashes on alarm activation, eg: indicator or park light flash, but not headlamp)
Optional
• Optical status indicator (eg: LED)
• System override

The NZSA also highly recommends the use of other security devices such as; padlocked chains, disc locks, wheel locks and microdots.
